Wyoming has long been recognized for its abundant Pronghorn Antelope population.

In fact, the Cowboy State is home to the largest population of antelope in North America. While states like Arizona and New Mexico are known for producing impressive trophy antelope, Wyoming consistently leads in the number of "Book" antelope harvested.

This young buck antelope works to increase the number of does in his harem.

However, Wyoming's antelope herds are susceptible to population fluctuations.

Factors such as harsh winters, disease outbreaks, habitat changes, and human encroachment can impact herd numbers and, in turn, the number of hunting licenses issued. Recently, our antelope populations faced a challenge with the once-in-a-lifetime winter of 2022/2023. This event caused a decline in herd sizes across the state, with western Wyoming being particularly hard hit.

This herd is wintering well with plenty of feed exposed through the snowy landscape.

Central Wyoming, where SNS Outfitter & Guides conducts the majority of its antelope hunts, was affected by the harsh winter but to a lesser extent.

Over the past two seasons, we've seen a reduction in license numbers, a necessary measure to aid in herd recovery. This has made drawing a license more challenging for our clients, but it's a critical step in ensuring healthy populations for the future.

The good news is that our antelope herds are showing strong signs of rebounding.

According to the Wyoming Game & Fish Department's August 2024 census flights, some of the highest fawn-to-doe ratios in the past 40 years were recorded. Many areas reported 80-90 fawns per 100 doesβ€”a promising indicator for herd recovery. Additionally, this winter has been mild, with few extremely cold days and most temperatures staying well above freezing. This favorable weather means minimal winter kill, allowing more fawns to reach their first birthday, which bodes well for future license availability.

If you're considering a Wyoming antelope hunt, it's best to plan ahead. Our hunts tend to book quickly, and it's becoming increasingly common to secure spots a couple of years in advance. If you've never experienced an antelope hunt, you're in for a treat. Antelope hunting is one of the most enjoyable and successful hunting experiences you can have in the West.
