In 2006, the Wyoming Game & Fish Department started
issuing preference points to non-resident sportsmen and women for elk,
deer & antelope. For several years Wyoming has sold points for moose & bighorn sheep. In order to serve the needs of our clients
and help insure your ability to draw licenses in the future, we felt
the need to develop and implement a preference point program.
First we will explain how the Wyoming
point system works. Non-resident hunters may purchase points in two
methods. The first method is to purchase a point (one per year) and
accumulate these points until you are ready to use them and apply for a
license. There is no limit on the number of points you may accumulate,
but you cannot skip two years or you lose all of your accumulated
points. The second method is to apply for your Wyoming license. If you
fail to draw your first choice you may still draw your second choice
and receive a point. For example: you book a Trophy Mule Deer Hunt #7
and also apply for a second choice deer license for Hunt #3. If you
fail to draw your first choice but draw your second choice, you will
receive a point and still go deer hunting that fall, and build points
for Hunt #7. An advantage to buying points for a future hunt is if the
draw odds indicate that 3 points will assure you to draw then we will
apply for the regular license instead of the higher priced special
tags, which saves you money. If you apply for example an elk license
and you have 5 points and your hunting buddy only has 2 points, your
points will be averaged out to 4 decimal points for the drawing. Even
if you don't have anybody in mind to hunt with it pays off to buy
points for a future hunt.
Points
cost $50 for elk, $40 for deer, $30 for antelope, $100 for
bighorn sheep, and $75 for moose. These are in addition to the
license fees and application fees. Youth points for elk, deer and
antelope are $10 each. Bighorn sheep and moose youth points are the
same as adults. Persons who are less than 18 years of age and at least
11 years of age at the time of the application may apply for a youth
point.
If you have no
immediate plans to hunt any of these species, but think you might in
the future, it’s imperative that you sign up for this
program.
The
advantages of a point program such as Wyoming's is you can actually
plan for a hunt. As stated earlier most of our hunts do not require any
type of point program because licenses are easy to draw. Points are
essential for our Trophy Bull Elk hunts, Hunt #7 and Jackson Hole
Outfitters High Country Mule Deer, and Record Book Pronghorn
Antelope.
Many of you have tried
over the years to draw a bull elk tag for hunt #3, but have given up
after trying unsuccessfully to draw. Wyoming's new system will allow
you to know for sure that you will draw a tag (we predict worst case
scenario 4 points). This has long been a very high success hunt on 6
point bull elk but only a license draw odds of 20%. Think about the
possibilities of actually planning this elk hunt and knowing for sure
that at some point in the future you will get a crack at these
bulls.
Our High Country Mule Deer
Hunts (Hunt #7 and Jackson Hole Outfitters) will also require points to
assure you the opportunity to try one of these premiere hunts. We
believe these tags will only require 2 points for the most unlucky to
be assured of a draw. Once again, remember you can draw a point and
also go on a deer hunt the same year. If you want to try your hand at
this type of deer hunt, points are essential and you need to start now.
We also have a couple of ranches we do not hunt now for deer because
the draw odds are not good, but with points these ranches can be drawn
and hunted.
Wyoming has areas that
grow very large trophy class pronghorn antelope that rival anything
taken in New Mexico or Arizona but the tags are hard to draw. The draw
odds in these areas are only 10% to15%. These hunts can cost $5,000 or
more in New Mexico or Arizona, but by buying points and some planning
you can hunt record book antelope with SNS Outfitters for a lot less
money.
Now if all of this sounds
like something you may be interested in, consider this: SNS Outfitters
will deduct what you spent on points for either the 3-year program or
5-year program from the current hunt price. For example: You sign up
for the 5-year elk program. Send $250 to us to apply for your points
for 5 years. In 5 years you decide to apply for a tag and thanks to
your points you draw one and go elk hunting with us. We then discount
the $250 you paid for your points from your hunt cost. In essence
your points cost you nothing. We actually purchase them for you. We
manage your points so you never have to worry about applying or
forgetting to apply. When you get ready to use them and draw your tag
the points are waiting to be used and they didn't cost you a
dime.
