TROPHY MULE DEER, ELK, MOOSE, & BLACK BEAR HUNTS: 5-6 DAYS IN THE FAMOUS GREYS RIVER AREA OF WYOMING: HUNT #7
Come with us and go hunting for trophy mule deer, elk, bull moose and black bear in the famous hunting paradise of the Greys River in western Wyoming.
The Greys River is without a doubt Wyoming's finest trophy mule deer hunting area and there is no other Wyoming hunting area that can beat the amazing scenery and trophy caliber animals. One of the secrets to a successful hunt is horse power and lots of it. We use strong mountain horses to get you into the high country where the big boys hang out. Your hunting adventure starts early in the morning before daylight. While you are waking your experienced guides are saddling your horse. After an early breakfast we leave the very comfortable Box Y Lodge and head up the trails (before daylight) for a day of hunting. Due to the rugged terrain we impose a client weight limit of 250 pounds; for the mule deer hunt only. We will be hunting alpine bowls, boulder fields and timber areas often at 9,000 feet. Quality optics are a must as most of the day is spent glassing and long shots are often required. This is a mentally and physically demanding hunt and you need to be ready.
The rugged terrain of the Greys River has more record mule deer than any other part of Wyoming, and Lincoln County was ranked #5 in the nation for record mule deer. This is the hunt for that mule deer hunter who is looking for a true trophy mule deer and adventure.
Preference points and purchase of the special deer license are important in obtaining these coveted licenses. Go to our preference points page or call us 307-266-4229 for more information. Wyoming sets aside 25% of available mule deer tags to those with no points. So don't be afraid to try and draw a tag.
We have an abundance of elk with the possibility of getting an additional cow elk tag. This is a resident herd living on the Greys River all year long. The number of elk is high for this area and has been increasing over the years; add to this a high bull cow ratio, offering you a better opportunity to get that trophy elk.
Like the mule deer hunts we leave camp before daylight, but because the elk are not as high in the mountains this hunt is not as physical. A typical day hunting elk is spent riding, glassing and hiking to different areas to look for the elusive Wapiti. The elk rifle season opens October 15th after the mule deer season, so your experienced guides have had plenty of opportunity to locate your trophy elk.
This is a general license elk area so we suggest you purchase preference points to make sure you can go hunting when you are ready.
Bear Hunting on the Greys River is in Wyoming's premier black bear area and offers more opportunity than any other part of the state. The largest population of black bears in Wyoming resides in the Greys River area. In the spring of 2010 we harvested 10 out of 11 bears. This area is famous for its color phase bears and has also produced more than a few Wyoming Outfitters and Guides Association Black Bear Awards. You have a very good chance at a true trophy black bear hunting with us on the Greys River. Because of the large number of bears. In 2011 we began offering fall black bear hunts.
We hunt over baits using ground blinds for both spring and fall bear hunts. Our baits have been in place for many years and are successful in bringing sometimes multiple bears at the same time. Shooting distance at our baits is about 100 yards or less. A day of bear hunting starts with a morning breakfast around 8:00. After breakfast you can take advantage of the fishing, go site seeing or just relax at the Box Y Lodge. Your very experienced guides will be checking trail cameras and restocking baits. After your guides return we compare notes and decide where to go. We eat our main meal shortly after noon and then head to the baits around 3:00 and stay until your trophy bear arrives or last legal shooting light. We then return to the Box Y Lodge and have an evening snack or tell stories.
For spring bear hunts we use 4x4 vehicles and drive to the trail heads. We then usually have a short hike to the bait. For our fall bear hunts we take horses to the trail heads and ride to the baits, as they are a little farther distance from the main roads. Our fall baits are not used during the spring, as they are up higher and snow bound during the spring.
This is a great hunt and a lot of fun. This is especially a good hunt to bring a non-hunter along as you have the day to just relax and enjoy yourselves.
Black bear licenses are an over the counter purchase upon your arrival.
Moose are plentiful and the most difficult part is getting a license for these big guys. The Greys River is home to a very healthy population of Shiras Moose. This population has flourished over the last few years and a day when you don't see a moose is rare.
We use horses for this hunt also, but the moose are not as high up the mountains making it a less physically demanding hunt than deer. This area produces good bulls every year and offers you the best opportunity to hunt and harvest bull moose.
If you don't have points, remember that 25% of the available license quota is set aside for those not at the top of the point system. Please give us a call at 307-266-4229 and we would be glad to discuss your chances to hunt moose with us.
Hunters stay at the comfortable Box Y Lodge, a very nice facility and the only hunting lodge in the Greys River area. Go to www.boxylodge.com for more information on the lodge. After a hard day of hunting for deer, moose and elk or for color phase black bears, there's nothing better than coming back to your own cabin and a home cooked meal, hot shower and a warm bed. Each cabin in the Box Y Lodge contains its own bathroom facility with meals served in the main lodge. For spring and fall bear hunts the Greys River offers you excellent fishing while your guides are checking bear baits.
In 2007 SNS Outfitters purchased Jackson Hole Outfitters to offer even more mule deer and elk hunting on the Greys River. Go to www.jacksonholeoutfitters.com for more information.
